Older homes, careful hands

Heritage home painting in Hobart

Hobart has some of Australia’s oldest houses: Georgian sandstone cottages in Battery Point, Victorian villas in Sandy Bay and Federation weatherboards through New Town and Lenah Valley. They need slower, safer work than a new build.

  • Body: sandstone, cleaned and left bare
  • Trim: sashes, cornice and quoins in off-white
  • Accent: a deep green panelled door

Colour schemes that suit the house

We bring period-appropriate palettes and paint large sample boards, so you can judge colours against the stone, brick or timber you already have.

  • Georgian cottages

Sandstone or limewashed walls, off-white joinery and a dark door. Often the stone is best left unpainted.

  • Victorian villas

Stone-coloured bodies with darker trims picked out on bargeboards, brackets and window frames.

  • Federation homes

Warmer bodies on weatherboards with cream trims and deep red or green accents on doors and fretwork.

Lead-safe from the first scrape

Houses painted before the 1970s often have lead in the older layers. We test before we disturb anything, then work to keep dust out of your home and garden:

  • Plastic sheeting and sealed work zones
  • Wet scraping and sanding, never dry power-sanding or burning off
  • HEPA vacuums and a careful daily clean-up
  • Waste bagged and disposed of properly

Breathable where it matters

Sandstone and lime render need to release moisture. Sealing them with the wrong paint traps water and makes the surface crumble. We use breathable mineral or lime-based finishes where they suit, and leave good stone unpainted.

Council and repairs

If your home is heritage-listed or in a heritage area, check with council before changing colours. We supply a written colour schedule and sample boards for your application, and bring in a carpenter for rotten sills and boards.
